How to Stop Worrying: Understanding Why You Worry
Worrying was like breathing for me. If I wasn’t worrying, I feared I wasn’t living. In my previous homes, I was always the one who had to be the adult. My family was not the greatest caretakers, budgeters, or emotionally stable individuals. Furthermore, I learned to worry constantly as a means to feel that I was in control of my life.
Later on in life, I learned the hard way that worrying excessively did nothing but cause me more grief and steal the things that brought me joy.
I want you to remember that the intention of this post isn’t to eliminate worrying ever again. In fact, worry can be healthy.
My intention in this article is to give you holistic ways to stop worrying all the time.
Before I give you those 3 ways, I want you to think about why you worry.
There are 3 main reasons why humans worry:
Control over something that hasn’t happened yet – You may stress over an event that hasn’t happened yet. This is because you are trying to subconsciously see into the future to prevent obstacles that may hinder your goals and dreams.
To Feel Productive – Sometimes worrying is a form of productivity. When you are bedridden, struggle with rest, or live life on autopilot, worrying can make you feel productive. Unfortunately, worrying doesn’t usually instill productivity.
A Crutch – Trauma can damage our brain and change our mind’s chemistry. As a result, we may turn to worry as a way to prevent a bad situation from happening again.
How to Stop Worrying: 5 Holistic Approaches to Enjoying Life Without Dwelling on Everything
Worrying may feel like doom and gloom. Thankfully, there are ways to take back your focus and power. Here are 5 ways to get back in control.
Focus on What You Can Control – One of the ways I found that helped ease my worry and my client’s is by focusing on what you can control. For example, if you’re worried about being laid off/fired at your job. Sadly, we don’t have control over our boss’s decisions. But we do have control over how we handle it.
Acknowledge Your Worries – If you’ve ever had a traumatic experience happen, your brain tends to worry as a means to keep you safe. One way to get in control of this is to acknowledge that your brain is worried but shift your focus. For instance, let’s say you’ve had bad experiences going on Tinder dates. You may become so fearful of online dating that you avoid it at all costs. On the other hand, you may be thinking about online dating all wrong. Instead of worrying about a bad date experience, worry about what could go right. When you combine acknowledging worries with reframing your thoughts, it can be a total game-changer!
